Cambridge 9709 vs Edexcel IAL Mathematics: AS and A Level comparison
Updated for current teaching sessions. Cambridge facts follow syllabus 9709 for 2028–2030. Edexcel facts follow the International Advanced Level Mathematics modular specification (unit codes such as WMA11). Confirm your centre’s entry combination.
Cambridge International AS & A Level Mathematics (9709) and Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Level Mathematics (IAL) both develop Pure Mathematics with optional Mechanics and Statistics pathways. Universities recognise both families widely. That does not make them the same exam.
The critical difference for students is structure: Cambridge builds AS/A Level around a fixed set of components (Papers 1–6 with allowed routes). Edexcel IAL is modular — separate units such as WMA11–WMA14, WME01, and WST01, each assessed in its own paper. Topic overlap is real; paper interchangeability is not.

AS vs A2: which papers / units you sit
Parents and students usually ask this first. Below, “AS” means the first half (Cambridge AS Level / Edexcel IAS). “A2” means the second-year papers or units you add to complete the full A Level. Confirm the exact combination with your school — centres choose allowed routes.
Side-by-side: AS stage
| AS stage | Cambridge 9709 (pick one allowed route) | Edexcel IAS Mathematics |
|---|---|---|

Worked examples (common school paths)
- Cambridge AS → A2 (Mechanics + Statistics path): Year 1 AS = Paper 1 + Paper 4. Year 2 A2 = Paper 3 + Paper 5. Full A Level set = Papers 1, 3, 4, 5.
- Cambridge AS → A2 (Statistics path): Year 1 AS = Paper 1 + Paper 5. Year 2 A2 = Paper 3 + Paper 6. Full A Level set = Papers 1, 3, 5, 6.
- Cambridge linear A Level: sit Papers 1, 3, 4, 5 (or 1, 3, 5, 6) in the same series — still four papers total.
- Edexcel IAS → IAL (Mechanics then Statistics): Year 1 IAS = WMA11 + WMA12 + WME01. Year 2 A2 = WMA13 + WMA14 + WST01. Full IAL = six units.
- Edexcel IAS → IAL (Statistics then further Statistics): Year 1 = WMA11 + WMA12 + WST01. Year 2 = WMA13 + WMA14 + WST02 (if entered for S1+S2).

Where students go wrong
| Mistake | Why it hurts | Guided fix |
|---|---|---|
| Treating P1 as WMA11 | Similar Pure topics; different paper design and mark schemes | Use the hub that matches your entered code |
| Ignoring route rules in 9709 | Wrong paper pairs cannot cash into the intended AS/A Level | Confirm AS vs A Level combination with school before buying books |
| Mixing Mechanics papers across boards | M1 label is not universal | 9709 Paper 4 ≠ WME01 as an exam rehearsal set |
| Late board switch without rebuild | Muscle memory from the other board leaks into timing | Rebuild with 4–6 weeks of board-specific timed papers |
How I guide the choice in consultation
- First question: which board is your school already entered for? Follow that unless the centre is changing policy.
- Second: do you need a modular calendar (IAL unit retakes / staged sittings) or a Cambridge component route your teachers already teach?
- Third: Mechanics vs Statistics preference at AS — both boards offer paths, but the paper codes and later combinations differ.
- Never choose by “which past paper PDF looks easier online”. Choose by entry, teaching support, and university advice for your country.
Topic comparison by paper / unit
This is an orientation map of syllabus themes. Matching topic names (for example Differentiation or Normal distribution) does not mean the papers are interchangeable. Use it to understand vocabulary — then revise the entered code only.

How to revise from this topic map
- Highlight only the papers/units on your statement of entry.
- Make a topic checklist from that column alone (9709 paper list or IAL unit list).
- Do not fill gaps with the other board’s past paper just because the topic title matches.
- After topical drills, sit a full entered paper/unit under time and mark with its scheme.
Rough paper-to-unit map (orientation only)
Quick vocabulary bridge after the topic tables. Still not a claim of equivalence.
| Theme | Cambridge 9709 example | Edexcel IAL example |
|---|---|---|
| Early Pure | Paper 1 (P1) | WMA11 |
| Further Pure at AS/A | Paper 2 / Paper 3 | WMA12 / WMA13 / WMA14 |
| Mechanics | Paper 4 | WME01 (+ further M units if entered) |
| Statistics | Paper 5 / Paper 6 | WST01 (+ further S units if entered) |
Revision playbooks
- 9709: lock the exact paper list for your AS or A Level route, then rotate Pure and applied papers weekly.
- IAL: lock unit codes on the entry, sit unit-length timed papers (often 1 h 30), and track each unit’s weak topics separately.
- Both: mark with the matching mark scheme; keep an error log (algebra, proof, modelling, data).
- Both: in the final month, full papers beat random textbook chapter hopping.

Common questions
Which board is “better” for universities?
Both Cambridge International AS & A Level and Pearson Edexcel IAL are widely recognised. Local university conditional offers and your school’s teaching strength matter more than online brand preference.
Can I practise Cambridge papers for Edexcel Pure?
Use them only for shared method practice early on. Exam rehearsal must be on your entered unit papers and mark schemes.
I am doing 9709 Paper 1 and Paper 2. Can I carry that to A Level?
The Pure-only AS route (Paper 1 and Paper 2) is AS Level only and cannot later count toward A Level Mathematics. Confirm your planned combination before you commit a year of revision.
